K-Pop...Three Years Ago
Just for fun, lets look back at the state of K-Pop three years ago by checking out the Soompi charts from October week 2, 2007.

This particular week, Big Bang won for a sixth consecutive week with “Lies”. They got #1 next week as well, giving them the all time record for consecutive wins on this chart with seven. It took a very strong showing by rookie group Wonder Girls and their song “Tell Me” to take over the top spot. It did not disappoint as “Tell Me” received six consecutive wins.

Another rookie group, SNSD, stayed still this week at number eight. Their debut song “Into The New World” reached its highest spot at #5 a few weeks before, which is very good for a debut song.

Most of the singers/groups in the top 20 are still popular and active today. Since 2008 to the present day, more then 36 idol groups have debuted. That is more then one per month… and not even counting solo singers.

You can always look back in the Soompi Chart archives and see what was popular during a certain period of time.
Here is the original link to the chart of October Week 2, 2007. Special thanks to edward1849 for his charts.

WEEKLY K-POP CHART 2007, October Week 2

No. 1 song: Big Bang’s “거짓말” (Lie) tied our chart record for a song with the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 by staying at the top spot for the 6th straight week. They narrowly edged Wheesung’s “사랑은 맛있다 ♡” (Love is Delicious). This song now ties with Sung Shi Kyung’s “거리에서” (On the Street) as the only songs to have spent 6 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on our chart. Earlier in the year, Big Bang’s “Dirty Cash” also spent one week at No. 1, so they have spent 7 weeks at the top with 2 songs this year.

Biggest Mover of the week: As expected, ERU’s “둘이라서” (Because it’s the two of us) is the week’s biggest mover, up 22 spots to No. 20. This is another very good ballad by ERU which is likely be in the top 10 next week. The only disappointment so far is that album sales of his latest release are not as strong as expected. Hopefully it won’t affect this song. Minuki, who wrote Daylight’s “After Hair Cut” earlier this year, penned this song.

Hot shot debut: Superjunior’s “돈 돈 !” (Don’t Don) enters the chart this week at No. 14. Lots of fans are waiting for this song to appear on our chart and it has made an impressive debut. When Super Junior released their first album last year, they were still considered newbies. After a year now, they are one of the top boy bands in Korea. With many members having solo activities or even sub-groups like Superjunior KRY and Superjunior-T, they are much more well-rounded and recognizable this time around. This song definitely has the potential to be No. 1 soon.

New songs: We have 7 new songs this week.

Songs to watch out:

3. Wonder Girls – Tell Me – Leapfrogged Baek Ji Young’s “사랑하나면 돼” (Loving one person is enough) this week to the top 3 and its score is getting close to challenge the top 2 songs. This is a big turnaround for Wonder Girls, considering that this song was still under the top 20 two weeks ago. With good album sales to support, now they are looking for their first No. 1 song.

5. V.O.S – 매일매일 (Everyday Everyday) – This song does become their biggest hit now as it moves up 7 more spots entering the top 5. Their previous biggest hit was “시한부” (Time Limit) which went to No. 6 early last year. Songwriter Cho Young Soo maintains his strong hold on the top 10 with yet another hit.

17. Cherry Filter – 느껴봐 (Feel It) – Modern rock group returns to the top 20 with this remake song. Unlike other remakes, this song was previously featured on an ad. It was written by 2 of the biggest names in k-pop music – Park Keun Tae and Minuki, both of whom have their own top 20 hits this week written for other artistes.

22. M to M – 못된남자 (Evil Man) – The R&B trio and good friends of SG Wannabe return after a long layoff with this digital single, which is our 2nd highest debut this week. Again, M to M bring us with a familiar R&B style ballad melody which has been so successful in k-pop these past few years.

23. Black Pearl – 결국너잖아 (In The End, It’s You) – Another new digital single on the chart. This song replaces their debut hit “좋은걸어떡해” (What Can I Do If I Like It). Many people say that this song sounds like Gavy NJ. It may be because it’s written by Min Myung Ki, who’s in charge of most Gavy NJ hits in the past. The song is about briefly leaving someone you love, only to realize that that person is the one you really love.

27. Yoo Seung Jun – My World; 巨人 (My World, Giant) – Yoo Seung Jun was one of the biggest names in old skool k-pop until his infamous military service refusal a few years back. He is back in the k-pop scene for the first time in 5 years with the release of his 7th album. He is still not allowed to enter Korea so there will not be any gasoo activities for the album. However, he still has many fans and the album is selling quite well. This song reminds me so much of the older style k-pop dance songs in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Fans should definitely check it out.

29. Park Ki Young – 미안했어요 (I’m Sorry) – The 3rd digital single debuting this week. Park Ki Young is one of the most underrated female singers in Korea. This time she is coming back with a light rock ballad that showcases her sweet voice. Her songs usually grow on you the more you listen, so I won’t be surprised if this song stays on the chart for a long time.

35. Cho Shin Sung – Hit – Cho Shin Sung (Supernova) is a highly anticipated new boy band from MNet Media. This song is a powerful dance number. Having Cho Young Soo write this song usually means, as the song title implied, a “hit”.
