Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - January Week 5
Hi everyone,
We are back to our normal weekly chart posting schedule. Due to a family situation, I wasn’t able to update the chart every week earlier this month. I have now caught up and you will see the latest chart updated weekly again. I want to thank soomp! and her team for covering for me during my absence.
At the beginning of each year, I reviewed the sources of this chart and make necessary changes in order to better reflect the popularity of each song closer to where they stand in Korea. The following changes are made this year:
GAON music chart – added as a 15% source.
Gasoo appearances on music shows – increased from 5% to 10%, but only 4 major music programs are accounted for now (MBC Music Core, SBS Inkigayo, KBS Music Bank, and MNet M!Countdown).
Chart Korea – lowered from 10% to 5% source
MNet M!Countdown Chart – lowered from 15% to 5% source
Album Sales – lowered from 10% to 5% source (now only 1 week lag instead of 2 weeks)
Starting last year, Korean record companies began to list more than one song as the album’s title songs and singers performed different songs on different TV stations. To cope with this, we have to change our long standing policy of one singer having only one song on the chart. Beginning this year, all their title songs will be listed simultaneously on the chart. You will see that this week with Seung Ri having two songs debuting on the chart. However, at year end, a singer will still only have one song on the summary chart. We’ll choose the song with the highest charted scores. Note that this change only applies to full albums have multiple title songs. When a singer switch to promote a second song from the same album, the old method applies namely until the new song scores higher than the old song, the old song will remain on the chart.
By now, you are probably familiar with the new chart posting. Thanks to soomp! who has created a mechanism to enable me to import the chart from a spreadsheet to the current posting format. We’ll highlight the top 10 songs one by one and from 11 to 50 it will be presented in a table format. I’ll make comments on the top regarding the chart as a whole rather than on each song.
Our special segments “Bonus Track” and “Yesterday Once More” will return but they will be on a rotation basis together with a new segment “This Week In (year)” looking at past year’s charted songs on a particular week.
JANUARY WEEK 5 MUSIC CHART:
For this week, Secret’s “Shy Boy” continues to surprise DBSG’s “Keep Your Head Down”, even widening the victory margin. Both songs are gaining points. While “Keep Your Head Down” continues to dominate the TV music programs and album sales, “Shy Boy” is doing much better on the rest of the chart sources. Looks like these two songs are headed for round 3 next week, unless MBLAQ’s “Stay” gain enough points to challenge them.
Popular SBS Drama “Secret Garden” has released three OSTs and placed four songs in the top 20. Male lead Hyun Bin‘s gasoo debut is a blast as he scored his first top 10 hit with “That Man”, which is the male version of Baek Ji Young’s “That Woman”. The two songs have the same melody.
CN Blue’s Jung Yong Hwa also scores his first top 10 solo hit on this digital single “For First Time Lovers”. This acoustic song is very different from what we hear from him in CN Blue.
We are again expecting many new singers, especially groups to debut in 2011. Dal★shabet is the first group that stands out. Their debut hit “Supa Dupa Diva” is rising to No. 6 this week. Definitely a group to watch out for.
Many new songs debuting this week on the chart. The song(s) that is expected to make a big jump next week is Big Bang member Seung Ri‘s double title song “What Can I Do” (at No. 20) and “V.V.I.P” (at No. 27). We may see both songs in the top 10 next week.

Through all this, Park has shown her own colors. (credits to motoway065 for translations)
