Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - March Week 3

It took longer than most fans expected, but Big Bang finally moves up to the top of our chart this week with “Tonight”. Even though this song had swept all the TV Show countdowns and internet charts for the last two weeks, it was hurt by the group’s non appearances in some of the other music shows and also lack of airplay points. Now that Big Bang has appeared in all music shows and the song’s airplay is much stronger, it easily won No. 1 this week.
Not too much movement within the top 10 this week. The only new top 10 entry which is Song Ji Eun’s “Are You Crazy?”, appropriately replacing her group Secret’s “Shy Boy”. Known for her strong vocals, Song Ji Eun takes a break from dance/pop and returns to her more familiar ballad songs.
There are three brand new entries just outside of the top 10, led by Hyun Bin’s “You I Can’t Have”. Hyun Bin boosted his popularity a lot from his drama “Secret Garden” before he went into his military service. This song is a temporary farewell song to his fans.
Female singer Sori scores her first top 20 hit this week at No. 12 with “Heart Is Dancing” with the help of hip-hop duo Supreme Team. This song has a heavy Supreme Team flavor and influence, reminded us of “Then Then Then” which spent many weeks in the top 10 last year.
Finally, K.Will returns with a new mini-album and the title song “Heart Is Beating” enters our chart at No. 13 this week. This song should have the best potential among the three high new entries. We should expect to see it in the top 10 next week.

Comment: Lexy (real name: Hwang Hyo Sook) stands for Luxury And Sexy. She is the first female soloist of YG Entertainment, earning the title “The first lady of YG”. Before she released her first album, she was featured as a rapper in YG Family’s albums. Just like YG later marketed 2NE1, Lexy already received a lot of pre-debut hypes among fans. She was better known as a rapper than a singer, but under further vocal trainings, she managed to do both quite well. Lexy finally debuted in late 2003. With the help of Psy rapping on her debut song “Young Fellow”, she focus almost entirely on singing. That is what YG wanted to introduce her to fans. “Young Fellow” was a booming success and went to No. 1 on various music charts at the end of 2003. Lexy went on to release three more albums but not as successful as her debut album. In the last two albums, she went back to more of a rapper than a singer. We last seen Lexy on stage in 2008 with her fourth album title song “Ma People”. She has left YG Entertainment and fans are eager to see her comeback. Rumor has that she will comeback later this year with a new image.
