Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2011 - May Week 4
F(x) is No. 1 again for the third week in a row with “Pinocchio(Danger)” despite a relatively low score of 846. They are still ahead of the No. 2 song by 85 points. They will face a lot of strong competition next week if they want to seek a four-peat. Their closest challenger this week is Sistar 19’s “My Boy”. The sub-unit of Sistar is well known for their mesmerizing hip dance now. The song however is a digital single and no digital single has ever hit No. 1 on our chart. Lets see if they will be the first one.
Lim Jung Hee’s “Golden Lady” moves up to No. 3 this week, becoming her biggest hit so far. This song has actually outscored the top two in many of our chart sources, but still far behind in some. When it gains ground on all sources, “Golden Lady” may have a chance to move further up.
There are four new entries to the top 10 this week. At No, 5, it is the first solo hit by SS501’s main vocalist Heo Young Saeng. His song “Let It Go” moves up 18 spots to the top 5. Heo is already having better solo chart success than fellow SS501 members Kim Hyung Joon and Park Jung Min.
2NE1 and their members are having two songs in the top 10 this week. The group’s latest single “Lonely” moves up eight spots to No. 6 this week, while Park Bom’s “Don’t Cry” moves back into the top 10 at No. 9. “Lonely” is an pop/R&B style ballad that reminds us of their big hit “I Don’t Care”.
Perhaps the song with the most potential in the top 10 is the new entry at No. 8, Beast’s “Fiction”. Beast is already on the verge of major breakthrough to superstardom last year. It is a great timing to release their first full length album “Fiction And Fact”. Title song “Fiction” is starting to win in music programs and this song will definitely be a serious contender for the top spot in the next few weeks.
Finally the last new song in the top 10 is from Co-Ed School’s female members. The sub-unit 5Dolls is having their first top 10 hit with “Like This Or That”. This song is a disco beat electronic tune, which has been very popular these days.

THIS WEEK IN 2008:
In this segment we go back in time to re-visit charts of the same week in past years. The Soompi music chart began in January 2005. At first we had only 20 songs and later expanded to 50 songs.
Epik High is a group that is always on the cutting edge in terms of their music. When I wrote my article about the evolution of Korean Pop Music in the last 10 years, I mentioned that Epik High themselves is a unique genre of music. They are mainly hip-hop, but often mixed with electronic elements in their music. And instead of talking about love like most of the songs, their lyrics is about themes surrounding our society. All in all that makes this group so unique and they are a class of their own.
In May 4 of 2008, their song “One” became No. 1 on our chart, coming from their “Pieces, Part 1” album. Even though that was the only week this song spent on top, it was far more popular than the ranking had indicated. Ji Sun, who just left Loveholic at that time, made her first solo come back as a guest vocalist on this song.
