Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2012 - April Week 4

After six weeks of male groups dominating the chart, the table turns back in favor of the girls as a couple of up and rising female groups battles for the top spot this week. 4minute’s “Volume Up” narrowly beats Sistar’s “Alone” by 5.5 points to become our new No. 1 song. Both songs enter the chart just last week though “Volume Up” was already at No. 7 while “Alone” was only at No. 19. Sistar was able to close the gap to a tiny margin this week. The main difference in the scoring of the two songs are in Music Bank and M!Countdown in which “Volume Up” is well ahead of “Alone”. That may change next week. April ended with a different No. 1 song each week. That is a rare occurance in this chart and it proves that competition is very fierce.

After the top two songs, male groups still occupies the next four spot, including last week’s surprising No. 1 song Busker Busker’s “Cherry Blossom Ending”, which falls back to No. 3 this week. Then we have our second new entry to the top 10 at No. 4. Rock group Nell’s “The Day Before” is up 13 spots this week. Like many Korean rock groups, Nell is always recording high album sales, and they have been very successful crossing over to the pop charts. “The Day Before” is a listenly friendly medium tempo rock ballad track that showcases lead singer Kim Jong Wan’s unique laid back voice.

Superstar K has produced so many talented artists in its three seasons. This week we find the winners of Season 1, 2, and 3 all in our top 10. We already mentioned that Season 3 winner Busker Busker’s “Cherry Blossom Ending” is at No. 3. Season 2 winner Huh Gak’s “Person Who Once Loved Me” is at No. 8. And the inaugural Season 1 winner Seo In Kook joins the top 10 this week with his latest hit “Tease Me”, moving up from No. 28 to No. 10. “Tease Me” is composed by Drew Ryan Scott. This time around, Seo comes before fans as a chic and slick man. The song has unique lyrics about asking a woman not to go too fast but not too slow either. The song is expected to be very fun and an upgrade to his previous hit “Shake It Up”.
