Bae Doo Na on Her Different Roles in 'Cloud Atlas'

Tonight, Soompi is co-hosting an early screening of the movie “Cloud Atlas,” featuring South Korean actress, Bae Doo Na, and many other big stars such as Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, and Jim Sturgess, to name a few. Congratulations to the fifty Soompiers who won a pair of tickets to the screening!

Cloud Atlas,” an independent film written and directed by Lana and Andy Wachowski (best known for their work on the “Matrix” trilogy and “Speed Racer”) and Tom Twyker (the director/writer of “Run Lola Run”). The film, an adaptation of David Mitchell’s book of the same name, is “a powerful and epic drama that explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another through the past, present, and future.”

This is the first English-speaking role for Bae Doo Na, the South Korean actress best known internationally for her roles as the protagonist’s political activist girlfriend, Cha Young Mi, in the film “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002) and as archer Park Nam Ju in “The Host” (2006). Her most recent Korean dramas include “Master of Study” (2010) and “Gloria” (2010).

Bae Doo Na plays a central role in the film as Sonmi-451. In Miss Bae’s own words (interview here), Sonmi-451 is “a clone who works as a server in a restaurant…She’s completely controlled by human beings at the beginning of the film. She meets Chang [Jim Sturgess’ character] and she becomes strong…and she finally stands up to the world with dignity.”

Watch Bae Doo Na discuss what it was like preparing for her first English-speaking role, playing multiple characters in the film, and more in her interview with her co-star, Jim Sturgess, below:
