Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2013 - August Week 2
Another week, another new No. 1 song. This time, it belongs to BEAST, as their latest hit “Shadow” moves up four spots and defeated last week’s No. 1 Ailee’s “U&I” by 10 points. It is BEAST’s third No. 1 song on our chart. In the past they did it with “Breath” in 2010 and “Fiction” in 2011. Congratulations to BEAST.
There are only two new songs on our chart this week.
Right below the top three at No. 4 is perhaps the most surprise hit song in K-Pop this year. Unheralded girl group Crayon Pop moves up nine spots with “Bar Bar Bar.” The five-member girl group was one of many rookie artists last year but did not generate any hit songs or fanfares. “Bar Bar Bar” is the group’s third single. Just like their first two singles, it struggled on the chart when it was released in late June. People eventually started noticing this song’s catchy melody, simple lyrics, and most importantly, the unique five cylinder dance moves. Now, the song’s popularity is suddenly skyrocketing. Crayon Pop was even voted MTV Iggy’s Artist Of The Week. “Bar Bar Bar” may be this year’s “Gangnam Style,” depending on how well it fares internationally. In four weeks on our chart, “Bar Bar Bar” has moved from No. 48 to No. 26 to 13 and to No. 4 now. I won’t rule out this song’s potential to top the chart, as its popularity is expected to remain for a while.
Debuting at No. 10 and perhaps the biggest threat to take over the top spot next week is f(x)’s “Rum Pum Pum Pum,” the title song from their second full length album “Pink Tape.” Through this album, fans will be able to see the members’ color and individual style. “Rum Pum Pum Pum” is an addictive dance number with guitar and marching drum beats. It is our highest debut this week. The song is already sitting on top of many charts in Korea so it will be the favorite to become our next No. 1 song.
