T.O.P Hits 2 Million Views in 2 Days with "Doom Dada" MV
Big Bang member T.O.P‘s first comeback in 3 years and 5 months, “Doom Dada,” is not only taking over both Korean and international music charts, it is taking over YouTube, as well. Within two days, the music video has reached an astonishing 2 million views.
“Doom Dada” was released on YG‘s official YouTube channel on November 16, and after breaking the one million mark after the first day, the video kept its momentum to break two million the next day.
The music video was shot by director Seo Hyun Seung, the same director who worked on G-Dragon‘s “Coup d’Etat” and Taeyang‘s “Ringa Linga.” Reminiscent of director Kim Ji Woon‘s movie “The Good, The Bad, The Weird” (2008), Seo Hyun Seung’s “Doom Dada” has a variety of unique and tasty visuals and witty, artful scenes.
Especially cool to see in the music video was T.O.P’s expression of his point of view on current pop culture. With the nuclear explosion scene where the mushroom cloud becomes a plant in a pot, as well as the scene where T.O.P, dressed as an ape-man (after 8 hours of makeup!), is messing around with a mic, T.O.P represents his critical opinion on the dangers of the current state of civilization
T.O.P personally wrote the lyrics for the song, and he participated in composition, as well, with Choice37. The song has rough, yet abstract lyrics, and has a surrealistic feel.
In an interview, T.O.P said, “Rather than choosing to try and appeal to the masses, I chose character. As it is an experimental song, it could be quite an adventure.” Despite its experimental nature, the song has utterly captivated its listeners, taking over the number one spot on music charts across the country as well as internationally. Moreover, the success of the song has indicated a change in people’s tastes, to more accepting of music that really shows a unique, even eccentric side of beloved artists.
T.O.P is currently working as both a musician and an actor, having recently appeared on the big screen with the movie, “The Commitment.” This coming November 22, T.O.P will be performing at the “2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA),” with a fresh performance symbolizing the regression of current popular culture.
