Five of K-Pop's Most Famous 4D Idols

If you have been around K-pop for any length of time, chances are that you have heard of someone having a “4D personality.” Basically, this means that you are just a bit odd, strange, slightly weird or otherwise “out of this world.” Instead of this being an insult however, it’s actually intended as a compliment! People with 4D personalities tend to be creative and confident and generally bring laughter and entertainment to those around them. K-pop is no stranger to the 4D personality of course! When you put together any group of creative, artistic and unique individuals, there are bound to be some people who just seem slightly different than the rest- those are the ones with the so-called 4D personality. Who really qualifies as a 4D character though? Let’s check it out in “Five of K-pop’s Most Famous 4D Idols.”

1. Park Bom of 2NE1

Fans of 2NE1 know that Park Bom is the most eccentric of all the members. In fact, it’s a common saying that fellow member Sandara Park is 4D, but Park Bom is 8D! Over the years, we have found out a variety of odd facts about this 2NE1 beauty- she sleeps with bread in her mouth, she has a deep-love relationship with corn, she tells herself that she is Beyonce before going onstage and carries on full conversations with stuffed animals she calls her family. Even non-fans were really able to fall totally in love with her 4D personality when she appeared on the reality show “Roommate.” The funny and adorable singer once revealed that she had been electrocuted when she was younger due to a faulty light switch, so maybe that electric shock is what makes this 4D Princess so hysterically out of this world!

2. Heechul of Super Junior

Leeteuk, I totally understand your dilemma! If I had to start describing Heechul, I’d start with the words unique, funny, and slightly weird. Even from his rookie days, Heechul sometimes shocked people with his blunt opinions and sense of humor. Although some people misunderstand his forthright personality as being rude and arrogant, fans know that Heechul has just always been the kind of person to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Add into the mix his bizarre fashion, his limitless vanity, and his entourage of equally 4D friends, then you really start to understand why many people think he is the quintessential 4D idol (My favorite Heechul quote? “I, Kim Heechul, was born to successfully make women fall in love with me. It’s not my fault. It’s not of my own free will. My mother and father created this face!”). Good looks aside, he openly talks about his girlfriend (a full-length, body pillow of the anime character Asuka) and has an extreme obsession with the Disney movie “Frozen.” When a 30+ year old man has a “Frozen” phone case and wanders the airport with a stuffed doll from the movie, it should come as no surprise he is on the list.

3. Eric Mun of Shinhwa

Eric is one of the original 4D idols- his very weirdness is, in fact, what has endeared him to so many people. From perching on a bathtub for a photo, carrying on public conversations between himself and the characters he plays (much weirder than it actually sounds!), a strange obsessions with ears, and his love song written for bananas, Eric is one of the oddest (yet most adorable!) K-pop singers out there. Don’t let his rugged, handsome good looks fool you! He is playful and mischievous and loves having fun with his members. At the same time, though, he takes his responsibilities very seriously as the leader of the group.

4.  Lay of EXO

Lay is strong and fierce onstage, but offstage it’s a different story entirely! Famous for his 4D personality, Lay is extremely forgetful and zones out a lot during interviews or filmings. Among fans, he is also known as something of an airhead and has a strange way of expressing himself at times. Even band member Kai once said that Lay had such a 4D personality that it was in a level you couldn’t even imagine. Lay’s 4D behavior can be a little hard to explain. 5. Jaejoong of JYJ

Jaejoong has long since been known for his funny 4D personality. He spaces out quite often and displays a lot of airheaded behavior. What’s so endearing about Jaejoong is that he is totally accepting of his unique behavior. He may be a bit odd, but it is perfectly fine with him.  In addition to the rest of his otherworldly behavior, he has the same characteristic of other 4D types- he can be super direct and honest, but in a totally soft spoken way. Case in point? He once told a girl at his concert (very politely) that her boobs were really big. At a press conference for a movie, he even told another young lady that she needed to sit with her legs together! No good list of 4D idols can ever be totally complete since there seems to be no end to the people who qualify! Though these are some of K-pop’s most famous 4D personalities, there are plenty of other who make the cut as well- Onew of Shinee, Kiseop from U-Kiss, and Sunmi from the Wonder Girls just to name a few!
