"Oh My Venus" Makeup Team Dishes on the Sheer Time Required to Transform Shin Min Ah

One of the major challenges of the drama “Oh My Venus” is transforming the slim Shin Min Ah into a much more overweight character. Not only is the cost of such a transformation astronomically high, it also requires serious time and staff.

Including both the basic makeup team and the special makeup team, the actress requires at least seven or eight people for her transformation. For every shoot she has to add the silicon weights, smooth the patches over to match her real skin tone, and put on a special suit under her clothes, which comes to a total preparation time of three hours.

A representative from CELL, the special makeup team, said, “In the five episodes that aired, Shin Min Ah had to put on the special makeup 25 times.” With three hours per change, that’s a total of three days spent on makeup alone!

“In other productions, they film two or three scenes with the makeup and rest for several days in order to keep the skin healthy,” the representative continued. “But for this drama, they filmed everything in the makeup except for one or two shoots. Once the special makeup is on, the actress has to film for 15-20 hours. Even after erasing the makeup, she has to put it back on in a few hours.”

Many staff members were worried about Shin Min Ah’s condition, but fortunately she endured it well.

By episode 5, Shin Min Ah’s character had lost 15 kilograms (approximately 33 pounds). “We adjusted the special makeup, and we were going to adjust it again but there was no time,” the representative concluded. “Because the filming was so tiring, Shin Min Ah ended up losing a little weight herself so the modifications were unnecessary.”
