'Produce 101' to Start Airing in Japan

Mnet‘s girl group reality show “Produce 101” is set to hit Japanese airwaves this spring.

A show rep revealed on February 29 that the first episode will air via Mnet Japan on April 3, followed by 11 weeks of episodes every Friday starting on April 8.

“Produce 101” has already gained attention in Japan, and many believe that the Japanese audience will enjoy the program’s voting system and large number of trainees which is similar to the management of Japan’s leading girl group AKB48. Actor and the show’s main host Jang Geun Suk is also one of the biggest Korean stars in Japan, adding to the program’s appeal.

Meanwhile, “Produce 101” follows the formation of Korea’s new top girl group with 101 trainees from 46 agencies competing to secure a spot in the final Top 11. The final group will get to promote together for one year under the management of CJ E&M.

“Produce 101” airs every Friday at 11 p.m. KST on Mnet.
