Nam Joo Hyuk And Lee Sung Kyung Mature Alongside Their Romance In "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo"
The most recent episode of “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo” was more emotionally-laden than usual, but it was Joon Hyung’s much-needed chance to properly heal his wounds and close that sad chapter in his life for good. It’s also a maturing point for his relationship with Bok Joo. Dating now takes a backseat to the other things in life, but their love and support for each other will be the steady anchor that keeps them together.
The episode, which aired on January 5, started from where it left off in the previous episode, where Joon Hyung (Nam Joo Hyuk) and his biological mother (played by Yoon Yoo Sun) finally meet. Joon Hyung teared up with happiness at finally reuniting with his mother, and later told Bok Joo (Lee Sung Kyung) that his mother’s hand was very warm. She replied that his mother must have missed him very much, to which he said, “Of course!”
But some time later, upon overhearing a conversation between his aunt and uncle, Joon Hyung found out that his biological mother had actually returned to Korea to borrow money for her other child’s surgery fees. Hurt, embarrassed, and frustrated, he lashed out, yelling that his biological mother had no right to do this after being out of contact for 10 years, and that he knew all the postcards and gifts were actually sent by his aunt.
Overwhelmed with anger, he also shouted at his aunt, asking if she was only doing this because she pities him or if she just wanted to be a nice person. His aunt slapped him, and he ran out of the house.
On Bok Joo’s side, she received news from Coach Yoon that she had made it onto the national team, but she could not fully enjoy the happiness as Joon Hyung had been out of contact since the day before. After hearing from Jae Yi (Lee Jae Yoon) about what happened, she started to search for Joon Hyung, wanting to give him strength the way he did for her when she was in her slump.
She finally found Joon Hyung floating in the pool, and he cried as he told her, “She didn’t come to see me. She came to borrow money. I missed her to death and I thought she felt the same. It feels worse than when she left me.” Bok Joo hugged him while crying with him.
After things were cleared with his family, Joon Hyung turned his focus to getting onto the national team with Bok Joo. He would get a straight pass in if he came in first at the tournament, but although he succeeded in overcoming his start trauma, he was still beaten by Tae Hoon (MADTOWN’s Jota). Joon Hyung was disappointed, but Bok Joo cheered him up, telling him, “You were the best!”
On the day that Bok Joo left for Taereung (Korea’s only national athletic training center), she worried over whether she would do well, but Joon Hyung, supportive as ever, said, “You’re always dazzling wherever you are.” He added, “I’ll follow you soon. You know big brother (oppa) doesn’t turn back, right?” (Fans might recognise this last comment from Episode 9, in Joon Hyung’s pumped-up speech when he picked her up in a car for a drive to the sea.) The episode ends with both thinking about the other.
