Actress Kim Min Hee And Director Hong Sang Soo Address Their Relationship At Berlin Film Festival
Actress Kim Min Hee and director Hong Sang Soo were at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 16 to promote their new film “On the Beach at Night Alone.”
The pair were previously reported to be having an affair last June. Although news of their alleged break up were released later in September, there were also other reports claiming that they did not end their affair. Hong Sang Soo is currently going through divorce proceedings, having filed for divorce last November.
All eyes were therefore on the couple at the Berlin Film Festival, which is also their first public appearance since news of the affair broke out. But instead of being evasive, they whispered into each other’s ears, and Hong Sang Soo naturally put his arm around Kim Min Hee’s waist during the photo-taking. He even translated reporters’ questions from English to Korean for her.
Hong Sang Soo also said, in response to questions about Kim Min Hee, “I have a close relationship with her. That’s why I often ask for her opinion. Because this is my production, what comes out in it is what was inside of me. It’s where the dialogue of Kim Min Hee and the dialogue of Hong Sang Soo came out together.”
Interestingly, “On the Beach at Night Alone” is about a young actress healing from an ended affair with a married filmmaker. Describing the character, Kim Min Hee said, “She experiences reality and learns that if it is love, true love, then she must accept whatever comes her way.”
When asked if the film was about his own story, Hong Sang Soo said, “All directors tell stories about their own lives. The only difference is in degree. I reflect more on my life in my works.” But he added, “[This film] is not an autobiographical movie.”
