"The Handmaiden" And "The Wailing" Win Big At 11th Asian Film Awards

The 11th Asian Film Awards took place at the Cultural Centre in Hong Kong on March 21, where films, directors, and actors from 12 different countries were honored.

South Korea showed a strong showing with several big names from 2016 being nominated, and received awards in six out of the 15 standard categories. “The Handmaiden” in particular was a big favorite, receiving the most nominations for a single film in six different categories.

Out of those six, the film ultimately took home four awards, also becoming the most decorated film out of all 34 that were nominated. Kim Tae Ri won the honor of Best Newcomer, for her role as Sook Hee in “The Handmaiden.” Although the film is her very first big screen role, this marks her first international award, adding to her success in domestic film award ceremonies.

Her fellow castmate Moon So Ri won Best Supporting Actress for her role in the very same film, while Ryu Seung Hee and Jo Sang Kyung also won Best Production Director and Best Costume Designer for “The Handmaiden,” respectively, as well.

Meanwhile, Na Hong Jin received the honor of Best Director for his critically acclaimed film, “The Wailing.” While the film itself was nominated for Best Picture as well, it ultimately lost to Feng Xiaogang’s “I Am Not Madame Bovary.”

Another popular 2016 South Korean film, “The Age of Shadows” also was awarded, with Mowg taking home the title of Best Composer.

While they didn’t manage to win, other crowd-favorite nominees included Gong Yoo and Ma Dong Seok for their roles in “Train to Busan,” and Son Ye Jin for her role in “The Last Princess.”
